About

Marcus Cribb

Heritage manager, battlefield guide, historian and YouTuber, with a particular passion for the life and campaigns of the Duke of Wellington.

With a passion for military history after studying at Aberystwyth University and the University of Portsmouth, Marcus built a career in museums: The Tank Museum, HMS Warrior 1860 and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, including HMS Victory and HMS M33, and then as the manager of Apsley House, the Duke of Wellington's London home. He has since moved on to work for another leading heritage charity, the National Trust, as an operations and events manager.

He is experienced in giving guided tours and curated talks in a variety of museums, from a private tour for HRH Prince Edward to being invited to lecture for the Royal Wessex Yeomanry and the National Army Museum. In 2022 he gave his first international lecture, at the Gibraltar Garrison Library.

Alongside this Marcus has spent over 12 years in the Army Reserve, and has embraced living history and reenactment. All of which drew him to the battlefields.

On the battlefield

Battlefield guiding is his more recent calling. Having visited Waterloo many times, Marcus guides groups across the field, including an in-depth hike of roughly 10km taking in the key sites, memorials and locations of 18th June 1815. He has guided in Portugal and Spain on the battlefields of the Peninsular War, and presented an online series for Redcoat History on the opening stages of that war.

Having moved north himself, he has walked many Scottish battlefields, especially those of the Jacobite risings, “where blackpowder meets broadsword”.

Writing and broadcasting

Marcus is the author of Let the Men Cross: The Second Battle of Porto, May 1809, and the Liberation of Northern Portugal, published by Helion & Company. He is a regular podcast guest and co-host, a reviewer, and runs the Marcus Cribb History YouTube channel. You can find his talks and appearances and his articles here.
